Notes: Kotekan, for Percussion Quartet, is inspired by Balinese Gamelan music. "Kotekan" is a style of playing fast interlocking parts in most varieties of Balinese Gamelan music. One of the most interesting and impressive aspects of Balinese Gamelan music is the technique of using very close cooperation to play what sounds like a single line, but would be physically impossible for any single player to perform. Usually each player performs a relatively simple pattern, rhythm or motive that, performed as an ensemble, becomes an integral line in an enigmatic composition. In my piece, I want to integrate Non-Western ensemble techniques into the contemporary percussion (keyboard) ensemble and emphasize close cooperation and the synergistic relationship between performers.
